Here is a quick and dirty on how obesity is measured. Many times I have read people’s comments on how stupid and out of touch the medical community is to still be using the antiquated BMI system. There are several methods for measuring obesity but they are costly, not portable and not easily accessible for many people. They also are probably not covered by insurance.. That being said, the WHO (World Health Organization) and the NIH (National Institute. Of Health) use the BMI to distinguish different categories of weight status in adults. It is the ratio of height to weight and is the most basic, inexpensive and most common measurement used to assess and screen an individual for obesity. The medical community is well aware of the limitations of the BMI— it does not distinguish between someone who has a lot of body fat and somone with a llot of body muscle. it also does not take into account variances in age, gender race or ethnicity. Despite these limitations, the BMI has been widely adopted as the most effective, easy to administer clinical tool for screening individuals for classification of degree of obesity. Numerous studies have correlated BMI scores with increase risk of premature death and chronic illness. The waist to hip ratio method is the second most commonly used. It can determine whether you are a pear or an apple shape. Meaning, do you have more central or abdominal fat. Abdominal obesity has been shown to directly correlate to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, metabolic disorders and cancer. The skin fold method requires a number of mathematical formulas, results are often inaccurate and irreproducible. Measurements for someone with a BMI of greater than 35 are hard to obtain due to caliper limitations and are fairly inaccurate.
