FSers that know about protein: I want to try and get some in my diet because of thinning hair, around 120-240g a day, what could I have that's not calorie heavy and maybe snackish?

With 4 calories per gram of *just* protein (same as in carbohydrate), you're talking about consuming 480-960 calories in 120-240g of protein. Depending on the way of eating you're using to lose weight, that may be WAY too much protein. On a LCHF/keto diet, for example, the recommended protein intake is 0.6g per pound of ideal body weight. More than that, and the liver will convert that excess protein to glucose and store what you can't process as body fat! [CONTINUED]

To support hair growth and health, you need to consume particular *nutrients* (vitamins, minerals, and trace elements), not just *protein.* From healthview.com: "What you eat can have a huge effect on the health of your hair. A lack of the right nutrients including vitamins A, C, D and E, zinc, B vitamins, iron, biotin, protein and essential fatty acids may slow down hair growth or even cause hair loss. Fortunately, correcting a deficiency in any of these nutrients may help treat hair loss and promote the rate of hair growth. If you think you’re lacking any of these nutrients, try adding some of the above foods to your diet." (Written by Ryan Raman, MS, RD (NZ) on April 9, 2018) [CONTINUED]

How many grams are you currently getting?

Looking at your profile, you said you are limiting your calories to 1300 per day. Considering that fact, 240g of protein (960 calories) -- 73% of your daily consumption. Aim for consuming the nutrients you need, not just "protein," for hair health.

Tuna, fish of other sorts (not fried), eggs, egg whites, protein shakes. Nuts taste great and are convenient but are high calories; noticeably ‘butter me up’ quickly. Beef jerky if you can find some you like; I have a friend who makes it. I eat a shake most workdays mid morning but substitute tuna occasionally. I consciously limit nuts to three spoons a day, and only occasional days. Breakfast is usually eggs. Meat during the latter part of the day.

BTW, given your goal weight of 149.9 lbs., a "LCHF/keto" protein limit would be a mere 87g per day. You may be able to get all the nutrients you need for your hair by consuming that much protein *and* other foods with the correct nutrient balance.

@Gilly Fizzy, you asked Yasmine15585, "Don't you google things?Doesn't your doctor give you advice? Where do you live? Cloud cuckoo land?" We all ask questions (no crime in that) and answer, depending on our knowledge and experience.

In addition to lean fish and meats you could try collagen powder. I really like it for my nails and hoping it is helping with skin, hair and joints.

Hi yasmine15585 sorry to hear about your hairloss I have also experienced hairloss with my diet and it is quite scary. Extra protein is just a stab in the dark as many things can contribute to hairloss. Iwent to the doctor and got my bloods done, they tested thyroid, liver, blood count and various other things to check I wasn't deficit in anything. It turned out every thing was just ok. So I took it upon myself to take a multivitamin cantaining the various things needed for healthy hair ie biotin, collagen, zinc and silica. I didn't expect to see any results for a while but although I still have more hairloss than normal my hair is noticably less greasy and more healthy looking. I hope this helps 😊

Also, especially this time of year you should be supplementing Vit D (due to lack of exposure to natural light). I have no hair to speak of 🤣🤣 but I notice my nails growing like fury after starting to take them 👍👍

Thanks for the advice guys. Quick note, I realised after I wrote this post that the protein advice was totally wrong. No way can I eat that much protein lol. My hair isn't falling out, just feels a little thin, thinner than it was. I might just go down the vitamin route. I do eat all sorts, so avocado, veg, fruit, all that. Maybe not enough oils or protein.

Worry can cause hair loss too :) Your protein count is fine looking at your food diary. The problem with the food diary is that the Nutrients are generic and don't take into account the way things are cooked. Also as you have pointed out, you may just need to add oil (Olive oil as a garnish with herbs is nice or gentle cooking) As an example of generic nutrient values, if you leave potatoes in a fridge over night in water, the carbohydrate that the body can process goes down by half, the same goes for cooked pasta. Adding oil into food helps your body absorb vitamins A, D, K, and E (Immune System), whilst others are water soluble. The knock on effect of not having these fat soluble vitamins become obvious when you look into it, Take Vitamin D which increases the absorption of calcium, magnesium, and phosphate
