Something very sad happened yesterday. I guess no four legged creature is safe when I am behind the wheel. :( My Mini Schnauzer, Chloe Bear was running up the driveway to meet me as usual. She always runs towards the car like an idiot not paying attention so I always slow down coming up the drive. I'm not even sure what happened. I didn't feel the car hit her but I heard her start hollering and when I looked in my rear view mirror she was crying and trying to run. I felt horrible. I thought maybe I ran over her foot or something and we could take her to the vet. By the time I parked the car and got out she was already gone I think. I ran in the house and got Cody and we went out to where she was laying and she was gone. You honestly couldnt tell she had been run over. There was no blood or visable damage to her at all. I think he neck must have been broken. She was 4 years old. Oh man, I can't go into what a good dog she was or I will start crying and I don't want to do that at work. Well shoot. I wanted to have good uplifting things to share today. Poor Chloe Bear. I am really going to miss her. I knew it would happen eventually. We live in the country and she was always getting out in the road but I never thought I would be the one to hit her and driving less than 5mph on top of that. Well I am just glad that it was almost instant and she didn't suffer. So we now have one and a half dogs. Our lab mix that someone dumped out on us last year that we adopted and our P/T dog, Shorty. Shorty will get ran over next. :( My dad lives around the road from us about 1/2 a mile or less and Short lives at both houses. He started coming over to visit a few months ago and now he lives with us most of the time but runs back and forth to my dad's house too. It is really a good thing to have a pet in your life. They really become a part of your family.

Oh honey, so sorry for your loss. It couldn't be helped. Thats what happened to our little Burrdog. We couldn't break him of chasing cars and one day the car won. Love Ya Girl. Bren

People dump dogs out down our road alot. We have had strays come up, some stay, some disappear, and some get ran over. About 2 years ago we let my daughter pick out a puppy from one of my step mom's dogs that had a litter. Well she brought spotty home and about a month or two later one of Spotty's brothers still didnt have a home so we brought Charlie home. Spotty and Charlie were the yippiest... dumbest dogs I have ever seen....... They were inbred... no joke! Well they lived to about a year old and then they took up chasing cars. They were both ran over in the same week only days apart. I know it's awful, but when Charlie was ran over the person who accidentally hit him stopped to tell me. When I found out it wasn't Chloe I was so relieved. I didn't want the two little dummies to get ran over but at least it wasn't Chloe Bear. It's so sad that people abandon their dogs and just dump them out wherever. Our lab, the kids named her "Big Un" she is such a good dog and once we got her wormed and fattened up she is a beautiful sweet dog.

People can be so cruel to just dump an animal to fend for them selves. I couldn't bare to do it. I would worry my self sick over it.

i'm an animal lover too so i don't understand it either. our dog is 11.5 - she's getting older but is still a great pal to everyone here. she is fiercely loyal to us - she hates everyone that comes over (except my mom - HA!) she was run over by a UPS truck when she was 1.5 - the vet said if there wasn't several inches of fresh snow on the street she would have been mangled but the snow cushioned her a bit. she broke her pelvis in 4 places and her front leg, a few stitches here & there but came out of it ok. but that's when she got mean with strangers - which is fine with me. when people come over she goes to her bed in the back but watches everything. it's kind of funny! take care - i know it hurts but she knows she was loved!

Amanda, I am so sorry about your little dog. We have dogs dumped here all the time. Our newest acquisition is a black lab/greyhound mix that someone dumped. He has been here about 1 1/2 years now, and we are still trying to get him fattened up. He was so close to death, but is getting better and finally beginning to learn some commands. And he loves me to death!! I am his mama. But when he gets out of the fenced in area, he is off and getting him back is an exercise in frustration. He always heads for the road, and I am so scared he will get hit. So we lock him on the screened porch when we are going somewhere and keep the gate closed on our drive so that he is safe. We have the four dogs and luckily none of them chase cars, although they do like to run along side.

People really just need to spay and neuter their pets. It is sad but alot of times out in the country people have to shoot the dogs that are dumped out on them. Alot of times they are in horrible shape, starving and have the mange. You can't take them to the pound unless you live in the city. If you live outside of the city limits they won't take the animals even if they were dumped out on you. Big Un was dumped out with her brother. My dad's friend took in the brother and Big Un stayed with us. She was very shy and afraid of us at first but now she is just a big old baby. It was so sad when Chloe died. Cody was digging her grave and Big Un was trying to get Chloe to get up. She layed down beside her and was whining and pawing at her. You also have to worry about your neighbors shooting your dogs out here. I remembered when we moved here I prayed please don't let them chase cows or go into other people's pastures. There are a few people around us that are jerks and will shoot your animal if it goes into their pasture. Even if it's not chasing cows they shoot it anyways. Luckily I am not too close to the guy who does it. Our dogs run and bark at our cows a little bit but they have gotten used to them. The horses won't take any harrassment by the dogs. I am surprized they haven't killed one of them by now.
