I finally measured my ketosis and I am in the lower level - one up from trace. Even with this level, I am losing weight at a remarkable pace. Last month when I was struggling to drop some of my poundage and checked my ketosis level, I was measuring in mid-level for ketones but at the same time the pounds were hanging on. I find all of this very interesting. So either it is as I have read, that ketostix are not the best measure of ketosis or, you don't need to be in deep ketosis to lose weight. Things that make you go hmmmmmmmm ......

You do not need to be in deep ketosis - AND there is something called keto adaptation - the longer you follow the keto approach, the less it shows in urine and on the stix. Your body has adapted.

Thanks for the info HCB. That must be what is going on .... either way, it's great to still be losing!

There are three types of ketones that can be measured. Breath, urine and blood. The one in urine is high at the beginning of adaptation. But if you drink a lot of water it will be diluted so the measurement will show up as a smaller amount. Also, once you become fully keto-adapted (which can take a few weeks) that particular ketone gets used up by the body and doesn't come out as a waste product so doesn't register on the ketostix any longer. The ketostix are a good tool at first to verify that you have begun the process of ketosis but doesn't truly tell you the depth of ketosis. Probably more than you wanted to know ;-) Either way...yay on weight loss! I can be in ketosis but not lose any weight. I've had to go a little deeper and I test the blood ketones for a better idea of what's going on. But even in a keto-adapted state there is no guarantee that weight loss will happen at any particular rate. I've got many other reasons other than rate to keep going, but it is a nice bonus to see the scale go down. Happy Friday!

Darlene: I really appreciate the explanation about Ketones! I think you are absolutely right about urine derived ketosis. Do you use another tool at home to measure the blood derived ketosis? Also, to be honest its more about curiosity for me because as long as I keep shrinking I am good. However, the more I know the better equipped I am for this journey. Thanks for the knowledge!

I bought a glucose meter that also reads ketones. The meter is a decent price, the strips not so much. They are too expensive to be able to test often. $25 for 10. I wish they were a bit better priced.

There is a breath test available but it is $150 and is ordered from overseas (I think Sweden). Ketonix is the first and only breath test out there right now. Hoping that studies and tests will help get more available, get them more accurate and lower the price. I guess it depends on the market for it. Their web page has a good amount of information if anyone wanted to read up on it and ketosis in general.

Surprise at the price for the strips ... that's a lot of $ for 10! I am going to investigate/read more on this for my edification.
