Just for the record, here's a great article about low-carb eating for women. I get emails from this nutritionist every day or so, and I've really learned a lot.

"A Low-Carb Diet May Cause Irregular Menstrual Cycles or Amenorrhea in Some Women" I discovered this about 5 months ago, now I'm on double birth control methods because the hormonal pill is affected to the point of not being useful. For me it was actually causing breakthrough bleeding in the middle of my pill packs but it is also a sign that you are burning away fat that has stored estrogen in it :) Which is what caused the bleeding to begin with. Oh well, minor bump in the road

I think it's important to really get perspective on this -- because as this article points out, there's low carb and then there's extremely low carb and the impact on women varies with age. I'm post-menopausal, which means the hormone impact of eating low-carb is less significant. Nonetheless, I don't really believe in extremes -- just not in my nature. I'm doing really well on low glycemic, with net carbs generally running between 70 and 120. I'm very careful to use the vast majority of my carbs in low glycemic fruits and vegetables. I don't eat white potatoes or wheat flour, or any derivatives of either; no corn, no white rice, and I generally only allow myself one serving during the day of a gluten-free grain-substitute, like buckwheat or quinoa or oatmeal. Right now, I'm trying to rely on having two servings of fruits and veggies for my meals, and skipping the grains altogether. We'll see how that works! Good luck ladies.
