Been a pretty good week thus far for running! Ran another 5 mile course this past weekend. Then I got to run with my 20 year old son! We ran 2 miles under a 10 minute mile pace (I am usually closer to 11 minute mile average). After a 3 minute walk, we proceeded to do 3/4 speed sprint intervals on the way home... run 2 telephone pools, walk 1, run 2, walk 1.... for the last sprint my teen competitiveness came out and I broke into a full out sprint! Not to be beaten by his old man, my boy kicked in to catch me and it was neck and neck at the finish line. Lots of huffing and puffing and laughing at the finish line! Followed that fun up 2 days later with a 30 minute run focused on increasing my stride length (equating to increased pace speed). Later, I used ontherun website to track the run... turns out I ran exactly 3.1 miles (5K)... so I have meet one of my mini goals of completing a 5K in 30 minutes... down from 48 minutes when I started!

Reflecting on the run with my son, it was somewhat bittersweet... I am glad we can run and be active together now... but I am mad that I missed all those years when he was younger when I could have been running, playing soccer or basketball with him on a regular basis. I instead chose to make excuses... "I don't have time to go to the gym because I work to much". Bottom line is I did not need a gym to lose the weight... I only needed to control my calorie intake... the gym and exercise only came after my energy levels returned. My FS friends, if you are struggling with indecision, don't wait for the pain of remaining the same (sickness and disease) to become greater than the pain of change (calorie control and walking)... CHANGE NOW!

Sounds like you have always been there for your son even if you couldn't be active with him in the past and that says a lot. You weren't in a good place once upon a time and now all that has changed and your son sees a father who has commited to a healthier lifestyle and I know he is proud of that.
