Hello community! So many of you are doing so well and it seems like you are all so active and hitting the gym.

Is there anyone here who finds it too painful to exercise or even too difficult to walk? I'm feeling alone in this journey as I can't do what it seems most of you can. I wake up and take my meds and hopefully in 2 hours I can get off my chair to make my oatmeal. Pain Management has now prescribed a medication patch....the meds will be absorbed throughout the week in addition to the my other nerve and muscle meds. Hope it gives me some relief.

iT'S this time of night 1 am, that I am ready to go hunting for my night fix....I had my snack and my fruit, there is nothing else, but I'm truly hungry. A 6" subway cannot hold me. But it's nice to have your sweet dh bring home dinner for you.

I'm just babbling away here. If anyone wants to give me advice on how to get the scale to more without walking or exercising....I am all ears. Atkins? Paleo? WW? Please share your knowledge. Thanks

Hi. I'm new here. I too find it difficult to exercise because of pain and being sick. My diabetic team of doctors and pharmacologists have encouraged me to do a little at a time. Carefully take advantage of the good days, pace myself, and try not to compare myself to others. We all have varying circumstances and abilities. I'm still struggling but I try to keep those things before me. Good luck in your journey.

Hi Thenenme! A couple of years ago I started what I call my Walking Like Insanity exercise. On the first day, I walked to the outside of my apartment building. A friend was there, taking in the air, so we chatted for a while before I went back to my unit. The next walk was to the building next to mine. After that, I walked across the street. I did NOT increase my walking distance every time I set out to walk -- and I was only walking every other day -- only when it felt right. Okay, enough rambling: just do a VERY SMALL amount at first, maybe only into the next room, above all, listen to your body.

You do not need to exercise in order to lose weight. That is the good news. Everything you were taught about food and weight loss so far is wrong. That is the bad news. If you have an Atkins book somewhere in your house, read it like your life depends on it, because it does. Rest assured, you have come to the right place.

Weight loss is truly achieved mostly by what you eat. I like the idea too of adding in a little exercise a little tiny bit at a time. Do the walk to the next room and write it down in a journal , then if you feel like it , next time walk outdoors, write it down. The more you move , the easier it will become but baby steps, to not overdo until your body can get used to it. best wishes to you.

Check out Prevention Magazine, it has so much useful information about different types of food that is so good for your body. Once you start thinking and finding ways to eat just to satisfy your hunger and give your body the fuel it needs , you will find a ton of things to eat that will keep you full longer and good for you.

Great suggestions!

Thank you for all the suggestions and encouragement! Baby steps sounds doable! And yep, I must have the Atkins diet somewhere in the house....I have every other one! I am such a carb-slut!!! Don't know if I would be able to handle protein and veggies....unless the diet plan changed. Sometimes I just feel like 50 years of being on a diet becomes so exhausting... but the alternative, I know, will be reaching a new high. Sounding like a real Debbie Downer, huh?

You are not alone, buddy. I have not been able to exercise yet due to some health limitations that are keeping me from doing enough of my regular chores as it is. I have lost 62 pounds without exercising. It has taken a year and a half, but I allowed myself to plateau during some stressful work times before getting back to losing weight. I track everything I eat here as religiously as I can, and I wear a Fitbit, which automatically transfers my expended calorie numbers over to this website. It has given me a good picture of the relationship between my food intake and my activity levels. I got the Fitbit mostly to track my sleep, since I'm not very physically active. It turns out that it helps to see how many calories it thinks I'm using up each day and to view that alongside my food log. It really has been about lowering and varying my food intake to the point that I lose weight. You can do this!

If you have time on your hands, Dr. Jason Fung has a six part series on YouTube called, "The Aetiology of Obesity." He breaks down the reasons why Atkins was so successful and why diets don't work.

Okay, make sure you are NOT ALLERGIC, talk to your doctor about taking the following and how it interacts with your meds: For the pain and joints: Fish Oil, Glucosamine (without the extra Calcium. To much calcium can cause kidney stones). I take one of each a day, it takes 2 weeks to help your joints. My mother has Rheumatoid Arthritis and takes more directed by her doctor. You can look up the benefits of it and I will swear by it. Helps my hips, knees and shoulders. With pain that you have, ask your doctor about stretches that will help. Not moving makes it worse, over time you might be able to do some minimal yoga. Even though my mother is in so much pain, she eventually went from not being able to do anything, to walking 2 miles a day and some minimal yoga. You don't need to be a gym buff at all to be healthy and lose weight. As for the being hungry, go for fruit, or even the little kid's fruit snacks that are actually made of real fruit juice. You won't feel guilty and it will fill you enough and trick your body into thinking its getting all this sugar. Most people are addicted to sugar. Find a nutritionist and see what kind of person you are. Some people gain more weight with milk, others with bread. Everyone is different. Find out what will work for you before putting yourself through diets that won't work for your body type.

I was always the 'fat kid', and have carried extra weight most of my life. Atkins (and the newer incarnations of low carb) has always been the only way I could ever drop any. This time, I prepared myself mentally for 2 weeks before changing my eating, and nothing will stop me now. I was a 'carb slut' (LOVE that! LOL) too. I didn't think I would ever reach a point where I didn't crave bread and pasta. But I have. Eating low carb is also the most anti-inflammatory diet you can eat. I turned 60 this month, and most of the aches and pains I thought were just aging have disappeared. I have more stamina, mental clarity and ambition than I have in ages....and as of this morning, I'm the lowest weight I've been in 25 years. You're worth the effort.
