So I haven't been doing this. Okay, might be a good idea to start.

So let's begin with the basics: I have a lot of weight to lose. I'm sure I'm not alone in that.

I started gaining just after 9/11, when mac and cheese, peanut butter and nutella sandwiches and a lot of homemade baked goods took the sting from culture shock. Let's not kid ourselves though: I've always had a problem with my weight. I watched my mother yo-yo diet her way through my childhood, and once I left home, I put on the pounds and did my best to act just like her. God only knows how much money I spent on diet programs and health clubs.

I told myself I wasn't going to try it that way this time.

At this point I've lost 12 pounds since I started in December 2013. I'm losing 2 pounds a week, and it's been steady, consistent loss. I won't say it's been effortless loss, but here's the kicker: I'm not dieting. I'm sure as hell not counting calories. (I tried for a while, just for kicks, but frankly it's completely unimportant to what I'm doing, so I stopped.)

I am determined that this time I won't diet. This time I'm changing the way I live.

It started with this lecture by Dr. Lustig: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBnniua6-oM

Then I wandered over to Mark Sisson's Daily Apple at http://www.marksdailyapple.com/ and read just about every article I could find there.

There was another lecture I'm trying to find the link for, but basically, the woman in question was talking about the link between carbohydrates and fat storage, and how the body needs carbs in order to store fat. It's not eating fat that makes you fat, it's eating fat WITH carbs, which is why that cookie is so much worse for you than that chunk of fatty prime rib (assuming you don't eat it with the standard baked potato.) This was a light bulb moment for me, almost as much as the light bulb moment when I realized that fruit juice is only the smallest bit better for you (it does bring some vitamins to the party) than a sugared soft drink. Even though I'd heard nutritionists say for years that you were better off eating the whole fruit, I never really *understood* that wisdom. Orange juice is good for you, right? (Wrong.)

So whole fruits and leafy vegetables=good. Meat=good. Good fat(coconut, olive, grass fed butter)=good. Sugar, grains or anything with a high glycemic index=bad. And that's what I've changed. What stuns me is how for the first time in my life I feel like I have some control. I'm not hungry all the time. I don't feel deprived because I'm not. I eat until I'm full, and when I feel full turns out to be a lot less food than it was just in November. (All-you-can-eat Buffets are no longer a good deal for me, financially.)

I'm losing weight. I still have a long way to go, but I am utterly confident that I can get there. This is a done deal, kids, my body just needs a little time to finish adjusting to the way it should have been eating all along.
