Well I started trying again around the 1st of April when the whole Covid-19 thing really kicked in on me. I am really carb aware - but have a heck of a time giving them up! It also doesn't help that I am on Lyrica which is a BIG WEIGHT GAINING medicine. So I have been trying to wean myself off - but then I am up a lot at night in pain (diabetic neuropathy in my feet and hands). So..... but I have a family wedding in October (my "baby" is getting married) and I really don't want to be an elephant at the last family wedding. So here goes.........!

Carbs are just calories. Which "carbs" are you unable to give up?

would you laugh if I said all of them? :) Seriously though - I was raised on carbs - pasta(my favorite), bread (2nd), white potatoes were in all the meals as I grew up. I'm a "old" diabetic so not much for "sweets" and give those up readily. Also wasn't raised with a lot of veggies unless you talk corn or green beans (we were too broke) so that doesn't help either! And to top it off I am a "huge" eater - so shrinking the stomach to where I am not always hungry is a real challenge. When my daughter went "keto" I once logged how many carbs I'd consume per day just to find out. Wow! Never under 150 and the one day it was well over 250. I did discover that if I tried to eliminate it down too far (below 50 in a day) then I would make it about 3 days and totally give up and not return for weeks. So now my current goal is below 100. It's not great - but better than my norm. I didn't make it yesterday... sigh... but I thought if I started on here again, then maybe....

Well, what matters are total calories, not your carb intake. What you may want to avoid most of the time is high fat+carb foods like pasta, pizza, doughnuts, etc, but there is nothing wrong with a baked potatoe, fruit, etc, since they can be pretty filling for a low amount of calories. I have gotten into the best shape of my life on 300-450 grams of carbs simply by watching total calories. Good luck!

I hear you on the carbs, I love them. I started tapering myself down on carbs by finding substitutes for some of the things I like and slowly phasing back the bad stuff. There are lots of low carb bread options if you can’t let it go altogether and simply choosing to eat sandwiches open faced or burgers with only one side of the bun will make a difference. I have switched to riced cauliflower in place of rice and mashed cauliflower in place of mashed potatoes. I buy frozen cauliflower pizza crusts to make quiche or pizza. Pasta Zero makes a yummy spaghetti noodle that is low carb/calorie and Banza makes chick pea pasta.

Also, make your eating count. Higher protein in your snacks and meals will make it easier to eat less. I snack on cottage cheese, thin sliced deli turkey, provolone cheese, or a cup of almond milk.

I can relate to carb eating. I grew up with Italian eating, bread butter, pasta, and not much in the greens. Now I am trying to eat more greens and good vegies and a little fruit (I can overdo it on the fruit also). It is a constant battle and some days I give in but keep on going :-)

My biggest challenge is summer fruits. I live them all but most are high in sugar n carbs! I'm trying to only have them a couple times a week but it's hard. They are just so tasty! 🤪😋😋😋

You will succeed!

Diana, you're silly. Fruit is detrimental how? Just weigh your portions to log them accurately and you're golden. I eat my weight in fruit. Mmmmm

Diablo, I watch carbs cuz if I don't they go straight to my belly. It's just the way my body works... I'm aiming for that flat, muscular stomach...I'm working out like crazy to achieve it. On plus side my arms are well defined and long (side) stomach muscle is coming along!

Not a thing, if any macro caused fat gain despite a deficit it would be fat but even that doesn't do that. Water retention? I can see that, otherwise nope, carbs do not subvert physics

I have multiple sclerosis and have definitely cried myself to sleep over nerve pain. And nerve cold is awful you're on fire but cold. if you have edema in your legs at all it can make it a lot worse. Wear compressions even if they aren't the in thing to do! I get mine from Amazon I use the 15 - 20 compression. Try to stay cool, stay away from sodium and stay hydrated. The doctors wanted to put me on Lyrica at one time but I chose not to because of the leg swelling. I am on Lamotrigine and have been on that a long time although I don't know how it is with diabetes. I have not had trouble with that medication for weight gain. Those are my words from experience. I hope that helps and doesn't overstep my bounds.

Diana, what are you doing for your arms? I am really trying to get mine in shape but I dont know what to focus on. Thanks :)

@rivy, I work my arms out alot at the gym.. For instance, today I did biceps, triceps, shoulders and back. Bicep curls using free weights and bands tricep dips, tricep kick backs, tricep pushups, shoulder press, skull crushers, lat pull downs, back rows and then I use cables. I also l use battle ropes. I do 3 sets, 12 reps each. I hope that helps. If your not going to gym most of those exercises can be done at home. Hope that helps.
