Hello, everyone.

Here I am, three weeks to the day since I had my right total knee replacement surgery. Things are going pretty well, all things considered. I had my other knee replaced in February, and lost so much blood that I need a transfusion of 2 units. No bleeder this time, and my recovery is going really well.

My surgeon was teasing me that she wanted to put up my picture all around the Orthopedic clinic, showing other patients what a successful recovery looks like. She calls me her "superstar patient". At two weeks, my range of motion was better than what they hoped patients to achieve by six weeks. I'm able to walk without a walker, crutch, or cane.

My eating has been a little out of control. I had prepared a lot of healthy foods an stored them in the freezer ahead of time, and my partner was really good about preparing fresh vegetables and fruit. I also received chocolates and low-fat ice cream to help me feel better - it did for a little while, lol.

Within a week, I was back in the kitchen, baking quick bread, cookies, and making chocolate bark. Whole grain pumpkin pancakes, breakfast cake, bread pudding...As long as I can stand, I bake! Ha ha ha! I'm a bit fuzzy-headed from pain medication, so I didn't sit down to enter all the new recipes in my cookbook, or to try and figure out the nutritional information of whatever my partner brought home to eat on a whim.

I'm one of the most dedicated, determined, and compliant patients when it comes to taking care of my body. My surgeon came to see me in the recovery room, went to pull back the covers to check if I could wiggle my toes, and discovered that I was already doing foot pumps, little heal slides, and when she laughed, I did a quad set and lifted my leg a little.

Later in the day, after I'd eaten, drank plenty, gotten up and used the bathroom several times, I had a visit from the physical therapist. I did everything he asked so well that he said that I could possibly be the first patient in his history to be discharged the day of a total knee replacement. The occupational therapist who checked me out agreed. I knew that once the numbing medication wore off, the pain would be too excruciating to deal with at home, so I spent the night in the hospital. They actually have good healthy choices of food there, anyway. I was out of there fairly early the next day.

I'm working with the best physical therapist 3 times a week, and doing exercises daily at home.

I know that I need to get my eating more under control. Although I haven't gained much weight in 3 weeks, I know I've lost some muscle tone, so I'm replacing muscle with fat. When I'm able to start building muscle again, I'll be gaining weight even though I'll be burning way more calories.

It looks like I'm on track to go back to Zumba and Pilates in another 3 weeks, after my surgeon releases me. She did at 6 weeks with my last knee, though I didn't return to Zumba until 7 weeks.

My partner's actually doing physical therapy exercises and talking about going to the gym with me; even asked for work-out clothes for a Christmas present. Makes me very very happy!

I'm going to say goodbye for now, and see if I can read a few journals before my brain gets too fuzzy-tired.

You sound wonderful. Thanks for taking the time to fill us in. Your recovery is indeed remarkable. Total knees don't go that well, period. Your surgeon did an incredible job. Of course you did the work before hand, keeping yourself in top physical shape. So pleased that you are doing so well. :)
