Try to move around as much as possible - stretch in the chair, stand up, walk up the aisle when allowed.

Reduce sodium and carbohydrate intake in the day or two leading up to the flight.

+use compression socks, they prevent legs from swelling, especially in long-term trips

all of the above plus: rotate your ankles one at a time to make your feet go in circles every 15 min while seated. then push down with toes and lift heels up and down 10 times. repeat twice. this really works.

I agree with @Alexandra - use compression socks. Over time our veins don't work as they should and it's the valves in our veins that loose the ability to open and close as our heart pumps. Compression socks helps those valves in getting the fluids back up into the core. Start with a low compression (0-15 mmHg or 15-20 mmHg) both of which you don't need a prescription for. Personally, I use zippered compression socks for every day use as I do have bad varicose veins in both legs but I can no longer tolerate the prescribed medical grade socks compression rate (30-40 mmHg). My current ones are the zippered compression socks at 15-20mmHg that I bought at a regular store. I also agree with the other suggestions on moving/rotating your ankles/feet. When my Dad was in the hospital recovering from a broken hip they had him write out the letters of the alphabet with each foot. That is something that can be easily done sitting on a plane.

Heather makes a really interesting point. I have quite severe lymphedema, and I need compression socks all day long. I didn’t even know you could get them without a prescription in canada? But, if you can, I have to point out that you should have that conversation with your doctor before you try compression socks. They are hellishly expensive, mine are nearly $200/pair and and you need to pair, minimum! OHIP doesn’t cover them in Ontario! If you don’t need them, it could cause other problems like numbness and poor circulation. These pressure ratings that Heather is talking about are quite constrictive. And on that note, and I only want you to keep an open mind, you may be looking at the early stages of a circulatory problem and I would take that as a cautionary warning to my doctor for some simple testing. Sorry, I didn’t mean to turn this on its head for you. But, it is worthy of consideration! My lymphedema got out of hand because my doctor did not get me into compression stockings earlier - DV

I do agree with checking with your Doctor if you are experiencing lymphedema like Drew or varicose veins like me or anything else leg/foot related. Better to be proactive rather than reactive in regards to your health. My own issue is that my previous Dr. refused to listen to my concerns at the time after having the compression increased and negative consequences occurred; my current Dr. is okay with my choice. And yes, prescription compression socks ARE hellishly expensive! I pulled out the Life Brand Compression Socks for Men box I have (I need the shoe size the men's size offers as the women's do not go as high). It states "These socks provide firm compression and should not restrict circulation. Consult a medical professional for appropriate compression therapy." It also states " Relieves & energizes tired, aching legs; can be used while travelling or flying; improves circulation; latex-free". Using the over-the-counter lowest compression (0-15 mmHg) should not cause any issues with anyone but do your research & again, check with your Doctor.
